I’ll admit, when our host at Lalluji Luxe first described the candlelight workshop, I pictured a done-up table waiting for us. It wasn’t that at all.
We walked in to find candles lining the doorway and rose petals scattered along the floor, but the room itself was still ours to finish. Marble pots of floating candles were waiting to be arranged, along with more petals than I knew what to do with. My partner wanted symmetry; I wanted chaos. We compromised, mostly in his favour.
It took us the better part of an hour to get the living room the way we wanted it, spilling onto the bedroom balcony once we ran out of surfaces inside. I didn’t expect arranging candles to feel like much of anything, but there’s something to it — the two of you doing something with your hands, together, with nowhere else to be.
Dinner came after, once everything was lit: Rajasthani food, slow-cooked, with nobody hovering to refill our water every five minutes. We talked for longer than we have in months.
