Jaipur, the Pink City, packs centuries of Rajasthani history into a walkable, endlessly photogenic old town. Whether you have two days or a full week, here’s how to spend your time well — with a few ideas that go beyond the standard fort-and-palace circuit.
The List
- Amer Fort — Jaipur’s most famous fort, best visited early morning before the tour buses and crowds arrive.
- Hawa Mahal — The “Palace of Winds,” best photographed from the street just after sunrise when the light hits the facade directly.
- City Palace — Still partly home to Jaipur’s royal family, with museums covering textiles, weaponry, and royal history.
- Jantar Mantar — A UNESCO World Heritage astronomical observatory right next to City Palace, worth an hour even if astronomy isn’t usually your thing.
- Nahargarh Fort — The best sunset viewpoint over the entire city; arrive an hour before sunset to get a good spot.
- Johari & Bapu Bazaars — Jaipur’s best shopping for textiles, jewellery, and leather goods, and a good place to practise bargaining.
- Albert Hall Museum — A striking Indo-Saracenic building, especially beautiful lit up at night.
- A Royal Night Safari — See all of the above lit up after dark from an open Gypsy; Lalluji Luxe runs a 4-hour version covering Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, Nahargarh and Amer Fort in one evening.
- A Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride — For a completely different perspective on the Pink City from above; seasonal, generally available from September.
- Stay somewhere as memorable as the sights — Jaipur’s homestay scene has become part of the experience itself; consider a design-led stay like Lalluji Luxe’s hand-painted 2D suites as your base for the trip.
Planning Your Days
Basing yourself centrally — C-Scheme is a good example — keeps most of this list within a 15-minute drive, so you spend less time in traffic and more time actually seeing the city. If you’re short on time, pair Amer Fort with Jaigarh Fort in the same morning (they’re close together), and save the Old City sights — Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar — for a single half-day since they’re all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
For evenings, alternate between the bazaars and something more curated — a rooftop dinner one night, the Royal Night Safari the next — rather than trying to sightsee after dark on foot, since most of Jaipur’s major sights are genuinely better experienced by vehicle once the sun goes down.
